My Thoughts (Exactly)

Good evening :)

Today has been a wonderful day for me, and I hope it has been for you too! Jas and I went to go get his bike wheels then headed to Charlotte to see Food, Inc.

When we got there, we still had 30 minutes before the movie started..and we hadn’t brought a snack so I suggested that we go over to Harris Teeter’s and buy a Cliff bar to split..but Jason wanted pizza. Specifically, he wanted to “split a slice”. When we go in there he decided he wants his own slice (*sigh* MEN.) We ended up getting two slices of pizza, me only eating the sliver of veggie slice that you see in the pic below, and a bite of the cheese…
I gave the rest to him. The whole time I was eating this, I was complaing to Jason: “This is a MEAL, not a snack” Haha.

Then it was time for the movie!Hmmm…my thoughts??

Where to start?! I think I pretty much sobbed through the first half of the movie. To read about the abuse to “farm” animals is one thing, but to see it in action is another. My head kept replaying the baby chicks scene and the sounds a chicken makes when it is sliced over and over throughout the rest of the afternoon.

I feel like I’ve been in the dark. Like the government could give two shits about the health of America. It made me sick to my stomach to know that almost all of the major food corporations are ALSO ran by (or have been run by) major politicians. I find it amazingly sad that it is cheaper to go in a store and buy a package of Oreo’s and a 2 Liter soda, than it is to go in and buy locally grown tomatoes and organic milk. It makes me hang my head in shame to see that our country is that way. That politicians and mass producers would rather have the highest diabetes rate than any other country than to take the time and effort to care about what goes into our food.

And you know what? (I’m gettin really heated here) I’ve never judged anyone on how they eat, or what they eat. And I can’t stand it when someone says “You’re gonna eat that?” or “I’m going to eat this, I don’t usually eat like this”..blah blah blah. Just because I am a future dietician does not mean I am sitting here judging you about what you are eating. That’s your business. After this movie, I’ve never been happier to be a vegetarian. I don’t think I could ever go to being vegan, but vegetarianism works for me. It may not work for everyone, but it works for me.

Jason kind of said something after the movie that bothered me…his arguement is that plants are living things too and if people can kill plants to eat them, then (if done humanely) it’s okay to kill animals too. I BEG TO DIFFER. Maybe it’s my animal-loving nature that I inherited from my mom, or maybe it’s because before my friends and other relationships, my best friends were my cat and my dog. But even if a chicken is out there in a grass field eating, at the end of the day, when the farmer goes to cut it’s throat…it bothers me (This goes for any other animal too, not just chickens). I don’t care how the chicken is treated, killing it is killing it, no matter how it’s done. <—–my blog, my opinion. Sorry if you guys disagree :(

That movie just made me thankful that I was already a vegetarian. It also made me scout out my local farmers markets so I can really know what I’m getting. Sorry if I went off on a tangent there. Jas and I have been talking and he says he is going to eat less meat. If you haven’t seen it…I beg of you, GO SEE IT. Take a friend. Take your family.

When we got back, we went for a two mile walk down to the river…it was cool and breezy and felt oh so good. My tummy finally growled around nine, so we heated up dinner:

Leftover macaroni and cheese bake with a spinach salad (mandarin oranges, tomatoes, feta cheese and poppyseed dressing on top). Mmmm, even better the second time around :)

Okay, so those were my thoughts on the movie..and my points that I had to make. What do you guys think? Agree or disagree?? I’m interested in hearing what you have to say! I hope none of you got offended, but it’s just such a strong passion of mine…please understand :)

  1. Hey girl! I really want to see Food Inc. I have not found anywhere near me! I see that you live in Charlotte though. That is so neat–I go to school at N.C. State, so we are not too far. I just discovered your blog and I love it. I cannot wait to keep reading about you!

  2. hey there love – that movie isn't playing anywhere near me, but i don't think i could even stand to watch some of the cruel things you described above. it makes me happy to be a vegetarian and have the knowledge of the way the food industry is run!

hope you and jason have a relaxing sunday :)

  3. Brian and I were just talking tonight about how we really want to see Food Inc. I can't wait!

Hope you're having a good one!
